California Agrees to Comply with Voter Registration Law Under Settlement E-mail

SACRAMENTO – In a victory for voting rights, the state of California has agreed to mail voter registration cards to nearly 4 million Californians who have signed up for health insurance through the state health exchange, Covered California, and to ensure that Californians who apply for health benefits through the exchange going forward are provided voter registration opportunities. The action is the result of a settlement agreement reached with the ACLU of California, the ACLU’s Voting Rights Project, Demos, and Project Vote, which threatened legal action over the state's failure to comply with the National Voter Registration Act (NVRA) and state laws.

Judge OKs Restrictive Voter Registration Process, Undermines Federal Voting Law E-mail

Yesterday, U.S. District Judge Eric Melgren issued a ruling in Kris W. Kobach et al. v. United States Election Assistance Commission, stating that the EAC must fulfill requests from those states to print state-specific registration forms reflecting state proof-of-citizenship requirements. Project Vote Executive Director Michael Slater issued the following statement in response:
 
"We are very disappointed and concerned about this decision. States like Arizona and Kansas must not be allowed to erect the kinds of suppressive voting restrictions that federal laws were passed to prevent.

Voting Rights Groups Applaud District Court’s Decision In Public Assistance Voter Registration Case E-mail

BOSTON, MA — On Friday, the United States District Court for the District of Massachusetts issued a series of rulings in Delgado v. Galvin, rejecting defendants' efforts to dismiss parts of the case, adding MassHealth as a defendant, and broadening the inquiry into the statewide failure of Massachusetts public assistance offices to provide federally required voter registration services to the Commonwealth's low-income citizens.
