As one of the country’s leading nonpartisan, nonprofit voter participation organizations, Project Vote works to empower low-income, minority, young, and other historically underrepresented Americans to become active citizens and effective actors in our democratic society. Since 1982 Project Vote has developed state-of-the-art voter registration and Get-Out-the-Vote programs, and has helped more than 5.6 million Americans in low-income and minority communities complete voter registration applications. Project Vote has also achieved a nationwide presence through long-term relationships with service and advocacy partners, and takes a leadership role in nationwide election administration issues, working through research, legal services, and advocacy to ensure that our constituencies are not prevented from registering and voting.
The 2007-2008 election cycle represented a landmark period in Project Vote's work. Our Voter Registration Program represented the largest voter registration drive in our history, and one of the largest nonprofit, nonpartisan drives ever conducted in the nation; working with our partner ACORN, Project Vote collected over 1.3 million voter registration applications, the majority from low-income and minority communities. At the same time Project Vote expanded its Election Adminstration Program, which achieved several significant victories that helped protect our constituencies from disenfranchisement, whether from legal barriers, unfair policies, or partisan suppression. Our Public Agency Registration Project, in cooperation with Demos, achieved important advances in bringing several states into compliance with requirements under the National Voter Registration Act of 1993, which requires states to offer voter registration services through agencies providing public assistance and assistance for people with disabilities.
